Is this course for you?

It's a great fit if you nod along to at least two of these:

  • You use Word every day and feel comfy with formatting, tables, headers and footers.
  • You build long documents like reports, policies, tenders or manuals.
  • Numbering has jumped from 3.1 to 1.1 on you and you still don't know why.
  • You send the same letter, label or email to lots of people.
  • You review documents with colleagues and lose track of who changed what.

Not sure which level fits?

New to heading styles and section breaks? Intermediate Word (Level 2) is the perfect warm-up. Tell us what you do in Word and we'll point you to the right course. No quiz, no pressure.

What you'll learn

Seven hands-on modules plus two bonus topics. Bring your own documents if you like. We love a good formatting rescue.

Module 1: Document set-up
  • Customise multi-level lists
  • Create list styles
Module 2: Formatting with styles
  • Apply built-in styles from the Styles gallery
  • Modify a style and change style sets
  • Create a new style
  • Save styles to templates

Bexie's tip: set a style once and it spreads across the whole document, like spots on a cow.

Module 3: Managing long documents
  • Use the Navigation Pane and bookmarks
  • Add cover pages, section breaks, and section headers and footers
  • Number headings with styles
  • Create and update a table of contents
  • Add cross-references, footnotes and endnotes
  • Add captions and a table of figures
  • Create an index and compile a bibliography
  • Link to other documents, pages or websites
Module 4: Track Changes and reviewing
  • Review a document and insert comments
  • Track and manage changes and comments
  • Compare and merge document versions
  • Mark as final and turn off Track Changes
Module 5: Securing a document
  • Check document properties
  • Remove personal information before you share (handy for POPIA)
  • Password-protect documents
  • Restrict editing and access
Module 6: Mail Merge
  • Create a data source, or use an Outlook contact list
  • Create a main document and merge it
  • Send personalised emails to multiple recipients
  • Merge to envelopes and labels
Module 7: Macros
  • Record and run a macro
  • Assign a macro to the Quick Access Toolbar or an object
  • Save macro-enabled documents safely (and why Word blocks macros from the internet)
Bonus A: Creating forms Bonus
  • Build a fillable form with content controls
  • Protect the form so people can only fill in the blanks
  • Automate a form
Bonus B: Word with other programs Bonus
  • Link a Word document to PowerPoint and Excel
  • Send a document outline to PowerPoint
  • Print charts

What you'll walk away with

  • A styled template you can reuse again and again
  • A long document with a table of contents, captions and cross-references that update themselves
  • A calm, tidy review process with Track Changes and Compare
  • A document cleaned of hidden personal info and protected before it leaves your desk
  • A working Mail Merge to letters, labels and email
  • Your first recorded macro, and a fillable form
Before: a messy document with uneven formatting. After: a tidy document with a heading, table of contents and a green tick. Before After

Aligned to SAQA

Our courseware is aligned to SAQA unit standard US ID 116942, "Use a GUI-based word processor to create merged documents" (NQF Level 3). Aligned means our content matches what the standard covers. It isn't a full credit-bearing qualification on its own.

Questions people ask us

Do I need to do Level 1 and Level 2 first?

Not if you use Word every day and are comfortable with formatting, tables, and headers and footers. If heading styles and section breaks are new to you, start with Intermediate Word (Level 2).

Which version of Word do you train on?

We train on the Microsoft 365 desktop version of Word. The skills carry over to Word 2021 and Word 2024.

Where does the training take place?

At our Westville training centre in Durban, at your office, or live online via Microsoft Teams. Our head office is at 28 Essex Terrace, Westville, Durban, and we provide support throughout South Africa via dedicated technicians.

Can you train a group?

Yes. Bring your whole team or come on your own. We train groups and one-on-one.

Will macros work on my work laptop?

Usually, yes, for macros you record in your own documents. Microsoft blocks macros in files downloaded from the internet by default, and your IT team may have their own rules, so we show you how to save and run macros safely.

Do you cover Copilot in Word?

Copilot inside Word needs a paid Microsoft 365 Copilot licence. If you have one, chat to us about adding a Copilot session to your training.

How much does the course cost?

It depends on the group and the venue. Send us an enquiry and we'll get you a clear quote.

Moo! Tip from Bexie: if something goes wrong, try Ctrl+Z before you panic.

Ready to give your documents a glow-up?

Tell us how many people are joining and where you'd like to learn. We'll come back with dates and a clear quote. No pressure, no jargon.
