Advanced Excel in a nutshell
NETCONFIG’s advanced Excel course (Level 3) is a one-day, trainer-led course for people who use Excel every day and want to work faster with fewer errors. You will link and consolidate workbooks, protect and share files, validate data, record macros, use lookup and dynamic array functions, audit formulas, forecast with data tables, scenarios and Goal Seek, and add sparklines. Training runs at our Westville training centre in Durban, at your office, or online, for groups or one person.
Is this course for you?
- You spend a good part of your week in Excel: reports, budgets, payroll, stock or sales numbers.
- You work in finance, HR, operations or management and have plenty of reporting to do.
- You are comfortable with formulas, sorting and filtering, tables, charts and PivotTables.
- You would love to stop rebuilding the same report from scratch every month.
Not quite there yet?
No stress. Our Basic Excel (Level 1) course covers the essentials, and PivotTables in our Intermediate course (Level 2) get you ready for this one. Tell us what you do in Excel and we will point you to the right level, with no pop quiz.

What you will learn on the day
Six hands-on lessons, each with a real-life example so you know exactly where you will use it on Monday morning.
L1Working with multiple worksheets and workbooks
Links and external references, 3-D references, and consolidating data.
In real life: Pull twelve branch sheets into one regional total without retyping a number.
L2Sharing and protecting workbooks
Collaborating on a workbook, and protecting worksheets and workbooks.
In real life: The whole team updates the budget while your formulas stay safe from “oops” moments.
L3Automating workbook functionality
Data validation, finding invalid data and formula errors, plus Excel macros training: recording and running your first macros.
In real life: A drop-down so nobody types “Dbn”, “DBN” and “Durbs” in one column, plus a macro that formats your monthly report in one click.
L4Lookups, dynamic arrays and formula auditing
XLOOKUP training and other lookup functions, dynamic array functions, tracing cells, and watching and evaluating formulas.
In real life: Pull a customer’s details from a long list with one formula, then find out why a total suddenly shows #REF!.
Dynamic arrays need Microsoft 365 or Excel 2021 and later.
L5Forecasting data
Data tables, scenarios, Goal Seek and forecasting trends.
In real life: “What price do we need to hit our margin?” Goal Seek works it out backwards for you.
L6Creating sparklines
In real life: Tiny in-cell charts that show a year of sales next to each product.
Bexie’s tip: if you copy and paste the same thing every month, there is a macro for that.

Advanced Excel questions, answered
How long is the Advanced Excel course?
One full day.
What should I know before I start?
You should be comfortable with formulas, sorting and filtering, Excel tables, charts and PivotTables, which is everything in our Intermediate (Level 2) course. Not sure? Tell us what you do in Excel and we will help you pick the right level.
Where is the training held?
At our training centre at our head office, 28 Essex Terrace, Westville, Durban, at your offices, or as an advanced Excel course online. Our dedicated technicians support clients throughout South Africa, and online sessions work wherever your team is based.
Is the course SAQA accredited?
No. It is a practical skills course. Our courseware is aligned to the outcomes of SAQA unit standard 116943, but the course does not add NQF credits to your learner record. The Certificate of Competency shows you passed our own assessment. Need credits for a learnership? Chat to us before booking.
Does it cover Copilot, Power Query or Power Pivot?
Not in this course. Copilot in Excel can now make changes in your workbook for people with the right Microsoft 365 licence. Ask about our Microsoft 365 Training to get the most from it.
Can we use our own spreadsheets?
We can shape the examples around your work. A friendly tip: send copies with the personal information removed, so your POPIA obligations stay happy.
